Political Parties in Plateau State have expressed concern over what they called ‘the high cost of Nomination Forms for the forthcoming Local Government Elections in the state’.
Correspondent JAMES ABRAHAM reports that the State Independent Electoral Commission \(PLASIEC) had recently fixed February 17 ,2018 as the date for the conduct of the much awaited Council poll.
It was also gathered that N300,000 and N150,000 respectively, are to be paid to the coffers of the state electoral body as the costs of Nomination Forms for both the Chairmanship and Councillorship positions.
Reacting to the development, some political parties expressed happiness that the state government and PLASIEC have finally bowed to pressure from the citizens of the state who are desirous of having democracy in place at the grassroots.
State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Abubarka Dogara and his counterpart in the Action Democratic Party Nanyak Andrew Daman who voiced out the feelings of other political parties in the State, however told journalists in Jos on Thursday that the cost of PLASIEC Nomination Forms for the Local Government Election does not reflect the present economic realities in the country, describing it as outrageous.
Disclosing that registered political party members in the state who are not happy with the situation are meeting to take a common position on the matter, they called on the State Governor, Simon Lalong to prevail on the PLASIEC Chairman to immediately effect a down-ward review regarding the costs of the Nomination Forms in the interest of the people.
