£11m Bonus Pot Will Be Shared By Chelsea Squad If They Win Champions League And FA Cup

Written by on May 7, 2021

Chelsea players will share a bonus pot of £11 million if they win both the Champions League and the FA Cup.

The bonuses, first reported by the Mail, include £5 million for the squad if they triumph in the Champions League final against Manchester City on May 29.

They have already secured £5 million just by reaching that final, with a further £1 million available if they beat Leicester City in the FA Cup on May 15.

How do the bonuses work?

Unlike at other clubs, Chelsea’s bonus system is collective. Rather than doing individual bonuses for club achievements, a single pot is shared between the squad.

It’s believed that one of the reasons behind this is to help team bonding.

The bonus amounts were agreed at the start of the season and it’s understood that there was a £5 million bonus for winning the Premier League.

What’s the latest on the Champions League final?

Despite the final being contested by two English sides, UEFA insisted on Thursday that the match will still be played in Turkey at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

This is in spite of the fact that Turkey is currently in lockdown, although this is set to end on May 17, and UK travel restrictions are yet to be announced.

Detailed information regarding ticketing is expected to be released on Friday, and The Athletic has reported that Chelsea and City are due to be allocated 4,000 tickets each.

As outlined in The Times on Wednesday, it is believed that the Ataturk Olympic Stadium will host about 25,000 fans — or one-third of its capacity.

What about the FA Cup final?

Ticketing information for the FA Cup final was released by Chelsea and Leicester on Thursday.

As part of the government’s Events Research Programme, Wembley will host 22,000 fans. Each side has an allocation of 6,250.

How did Chelsea get here?

Under Frank Lampard, Chelsea finished top of their Champions League group and did not lose a match.

Thomas Tuchel took over for the knockouts and has guided Chelsea to aggregate wins against FC Porto, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid to set up the final against City.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea overcame Morecambe, Luton Town and Barnsley before beating Sheffield United and City in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
