Spurs came back twice from a goal down to draw with the Gunners in the north London derby of the WSL Cup on Wednesday evening.
Vivianne Miedema put Arsenal ahead before Ria Percival equalised just before the hour-mark.
Caitlin Foord gave Arsenal the lead once more in the 71st minute but Shelina Zadorsky’s 88th-minute equaliser forced penalties. Alex Morgan’s missed penalty cost Spurs in the end.
Both teams scored their opening four penalties before Lia Walti converted to put Arsenal 5-4 up. The United States striker Morgan, who came on as a 46th-minute substitute for Lucia Leon, stepped up to take Spurs’ fifth but she fired her spot-kick over the bar.
But the result of the group stage game saw both Arsenal and Spurs eliminated from the cup and ensured holders Chelsea will go through to the quarter-finals.
Morgan joined Tottenham on loan from Orlando Pride in September after a year out from the game to give birth to her daughter Christy May. She was called up to the USA Women’s National Team training camp earlier this week for their match against Netherlands on November 27. The 31-year-old’s last USWNT appearance came in the 2019 World Cup final victory over the Dutch.
Chelsea top Group B, although their match away at second-tier team London City Lionesses was postponed.
The Championship side had to call their game off shortly before kick-off on Wednesday after two of their first-team players and one member of staff tested positive for Covid-19.
Leicester’s trip to Birmingham City was also postponed for the same protocol reasons after a positive test within the home camp.
Meanwhile, Women’s Super League side Bristol City ensured their progression to the last eight as Group F winners as they won at Lewes to claim a third win from three.
Elsewhere in the WSL Cup, Everton beat Merseyside rivals Liverpool 1-0 in Group C thanks to an early Izzy Christiansen strike. In Group D, West Ham won their third consecutive WSL Cup game 4-0 against local rivals Charlton and Reading beat Brighton 2-0.e
