Last Monday at exactly 3:33 pm ,a former chairman of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau state and the governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ,Barrister Caleb Mutfwang was declared the winner of the governorship election held on Saturday,March 18.
From the results announced by the INEC at its Collation centre in Jos ,Mutfwang polled 525299 votes in the election , defeating 17 other candidates to become the new governor elect of Plateau state
There is no gainsaying that the election that produced Mutfwang as the winner was a hotly contested one with serious campaign efforts by the three major candidates to woo the electorate to their side
The electorate were inundated with memorable jingles and persuasive radio and television commentaries as well as in newspapers .
The people were equally nonplussed by flaring emotions and dramatic outbursts, even in the churches, mosques and other places of public gathering .
They watched as their brothers and sisters wage a war of rhetoric, propaganda, ego and brinkmanship on social media as well as WhatsApp groups in their bid to ensure that their preferred candidate emerged victorious .That is democracy in action .
But as it eventually turned out , Plateau people who are familiar with all the candidates and their seemingly excellent programmes that could lead to the realization of their missions , eventually settled for the PDP candidate ,Caleb Mutfwang at the poll.
As a former Governor of Plateau state,Jonah Jang puts it in a remark, the PDP with support from the people have succeeded in changing the change in Plateau
Now ,having being declared the winner of Plateau’s most critical election in recent memory, there is no doubts that the challenge before the governor -elect is more daunting than the dramatic, tortuous and contentious journey to the Rayfield Government House.
The poor ratings of the outgoing administration in virtually all areas of governance, explain how weighty these responsibilities are. Therein lies the major task before the governor elect in line with the expectations of the people to maintain and expand efforts to improve the lives of Plateau people irrespective of political, religious or ethnic affiliations.
Thankfully,Caleb Mutfwang’s victory speech seems to have pointed to his readiness to turn things around for good in Plateau as it smacks of magnanimity, inclusiveness, unity ,love and determination to succeed .
Therefore as the people awaits his formal swearing in as governor of Plateau state come May 29 to enable him get down to work ,they must sustain the renewed hope and rally round the governor -elect for a better Plateau
