Increase In Demand For Condoms As Gombe Youths Try To Prevent Unwanted Pregnancies

Written by on June 1, 2021

The Facility Manager of Liji Primary Health Care Centre, Gombe State, Mary Usman, says the facility is witnessing an increase in demand for condoms by male youths.

Usman disclosed this on Monday, in an interview with PUNCH HealthWise during a facility tour of Yalmatu Deba Local Government Area organised for journalists. The tour was to create awareness for child spacing in Gombe.

The facility manager said that child spacing awareness had increased in the state.

She also disclosed that the residence of Liji community had shown a preference for the use Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD).

Usman said, “Because we are doing youth-friendly, out of the 30 clients who visit us every week, 20 are unmarried youths (males) and 10 married women. They come specifically to collect condoms. However, we don’t see unmarried females coming around.

“After every insertion or injection, we usually ensure they go through counselling that will enable them to know when to come back.

“Clients usually come every 24 hours to subscribe to child spacing. About 30 women use to come here both new and old cases. We have noticed a growing demand for insertion methods; the implant, the Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD), because it has fewer complications when compared to the injectables.”

Also speaking during the tour, Deputy Facility Manager Kwadon Primary Health Care Centre Aishatu Jibril, acknowledged the deliberate attempts by youths to end unwanted pregnancies by collecting condoms.

Jibril said, “We also have youth clients who demand condoms as well as some married women.

“There is a bit of increase in women who come to the facility for child spacing.

“It ranges from 4-5 women daily and some other times they come mostly during immunisation. In a week we may have about 15.”

She revealed that the support of fathers is gradually increasing, adding that the community had shown enormous support on the uptake of child spacing methods.

“Sometimes they come with their husbands and other times their husbands come first to acquire more knowledge before bringing their wives.

“Commodities are available, most of our clients prefer Noristerat injectable and the implant maybe because they think it is safe for them, she said.
