More than 250 students of the University of Jos who are currently stranded due to the security breach in the Jos Metropolis were provided with relief materials through the joint efforts of the Hotcoal Basketball Club, Hands of Care Project, and Abdul Sabiu Rahmah Initiative (ASR Africa) on Sunday at the Students Village Hostel, Naraguta campus.
In a statement, Carl James, the spokesperson for the Hotcoal Basketball Club said the distribution prioritized ‘students and people with disabilities’ as well as ‘security men in the hostels and the immediate communities around the University community’.
He further stated that, out of 250 beneficiaries, 50 were persons living with disabilities.
Responding on behalf of the Hands of Care Project, the Executive Director, Ubon Udohdescribed the distribution exercise as a ‘small drop’ into the multiple efforts of so many providing support and succor for people affected by the violence.
‘It is our hope and prayer that (while we pray for lasting peace and a permanent peaceful solution and an end to the violence), we can continue to aggregate small efforts like this to alleviate the situation of those caught in the middle of it’, Mr. Udoh added.
Some students of the university have been killed and others injured in the current insecurity that has bedevilled Jos since the killing of over 20 travellers last week, this has resulted in the suspension of academic activities by the Jos varsity’s management.
