With the conclusion of political party primaries and the emergence of various candidates for the 2023 elections, campaigns and rallies by political parties are expected to kick off in no distant time
While that is being awaited ,the memories left behind by the party primaries in the minds of Nigerians ,no doubts ,will continue to linger for a long time .
Apart from the concern raised by many Nigerians of the high cost of nomination and interest forms charged by some political parties ,there were allegations of the use of money to induce delegates during the primaries which have also been condemned by well meaning Nigerians as well
However, when the primaries eventually held , they were generally peaceful and devoid of the rancour and ballot-box snatching, that in the past characterized the exercise.
Notwithstanding the lapses and anomalies that trailed the recent primary elections across parties, progress however ,could be said to have been made by some of the political parties in their bid to forge a united front and build a strong democratic culture aimed at winning the main election.
For instance ,the recent reconciliation meeting organized by members of the Plateau state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party after their primaries is a positive development
State Chairman of the party,Chris Hassan said that the meeting which held at the Eliel Centre in Jos was aimed at mending fences particularly with members who contested but lost the recent primary elections which produced the party’s flag-bearers across the state
Hassan stressed that the objective is for the party members to go into the 2023 general election together as a united family
With such peaceful disposition by the party ,it was therefore not surprising that virtually all the governorship aspirants who contested with the PDP candidate ,Caleb Mutfwang, were in attendance during the meeting along side other stakeholders
Mutfwang, who expressed gratitude to members of the party for entrusting him with the party ticket, also thanked all those who contested the primaries with him for accepting to rally round for victory in 2023.
He said a robust campaign team would be constituted to accommodate all members of the party to work together in unity for the victory of the party.
Other political parties including the ruling All Progressives Congress are also said to be making efforts to reconcile their members after the primaries
As the various political parties continue to receive a pat on the back for holding chaos-free primaries and making efforts to put their house in order , they should know that the people expect more positive developments from them , particularly in the remaining stages of the journey to the 2023 general elections.
There are expected to promptly meet up with all the other timelines set by INEC for all political activities scheduled on the timetable of the 2023 general elections.
Also, the electioneering campaigns, when they kick off, should be devoid of the use of thugs and other elements of political intimidation by party leaders and aspirants.
Not only that , Public speeches by aspirants and their supporters at political rallies or conversations at interviews expressed by any means, electronic or otherwise, conventional or social media, should be issue based and free from hate speech.
The relatively peaceful and orderly manner in which party primaries were conducted should reflect in the activities of politicians as Plateau state and indeed Nigeria march toward the 2023 general elections.
