In the next 48 hours,on November 25th to be precise, Nigerians will join the rest of the world to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This day was established by United Nations General Assembly during the year of 1993.
It defines violence against women as an act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats, etc.
No doubts, many women in Nigeria, like their counterparts in other parts of the world, are victims of gender-based violence.
The phenomenon has remained largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma, and shame surrounding it.
In general terms, it manifests itself in different forms including battering between those in relationships, psychological abuse, forced marriage, rape, human trafficking street harassment among others .
It has been noted that The adverse psychological, sexual, and reproductive health consequences of violence against women and girls affect them at all stages of their life.
While gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls are particularly vulnerable
The sad development which has continued to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, and peace as well as to the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights should not be allowed to continue
This is particularly important because the promise of the Sustainable Development Goal not to leave no one behind cannot be fulfilled without putting an end to violence against women and girls.
Therefore, there is the need to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world including in Nigeria and Plateau state.
This calls for global and local action to increase awareness, promote advocacy, and create opportunities for discussion on challenges and solutions.
That is why the theme for the 2022 World International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is UNITE: Activism to End Violence against Women & Girls.
Be part of it.
