NLC insists on Wednesday strike as union mobilizes workers

Written by on July 31, 2023

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Jim Obazee as a Special Investigator to probe the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other related entities.

In a letter dated 28 July, seen by journalists, Tinubu says the appointment of Obazee, relying on the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15 (5) of the Nigerian constitution, was in furtherance of his administration’s anti-corruption fight.

The appointment is with immediate effect and Mr. Obazee is to report directly to the president.

According to the letter signed by the president, the full terms of Mr Obazee’s engagement as a special investigator will be communicated to him in due course.

A total shutdown of the economy may be looming large as the Nigeria Labour Congress has commenced mass mobilization ahead of its planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin Wednesday to protest the hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal.

In a schedule obtained by journalists in Abuja yesterday, the NLC urges Nigerians to join them at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Wednesday; that is August 2, 2023, at 7 am.

The NLC further says the Federal Government should immediately deal decisively with the criminal content of subsidy instead of exposing ordinary citizens to avoidable pain and hardship.

Speaking further on the recent monetary policies rolled out by the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government, the NLC said, it was concerned that no government acting reasonably leaves its national currency to forces of the market.

Insisting on its demands, the union reiterates the need for the government to immediately reverse all anti-poor policies, and release the withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, among others.
