Today, the Not Too Young To Run Movement has condemn in totality the unconstitutional attempted impeachment of the legitimate Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly (PLHA), Rt Hon Abok Nuhu Ayuba on Thursday 28, by 8 persons of the 24 members of the House.
The Movement, in a statement called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct security agencies to probe the allege personnel’s involvement in the mess and restore order in the House to guarantee that Rt Hon Abok is accorded full legal and security protection to continue to preside over Legislative business of the House without intimidation and interference.
Convener of the Movement, Mr Samson Itodo said that “the State House of Assembly is a constitutional establishment and must, in all instances be seen to perform in consonance and conformity with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
He said “the purported attempted impeachment of Rt Hon Abok Ayuba disregards the procedure described by the Constitution for the impeachment of a duly elected Speaker of the House of Assembly.” He further quoted section 92 (2)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which provides that a Speaker can only be remove from office by a resolution or votes of not less than two-thirds (2/3) majority of members of the House of Assembly.
He therefore stressed that “by virtue of this provision, a minimum of (16) members of the House which constitute a total of 24 persons would’ve been required to successfully impeach the Speaker, but failure to attain this requirement has consequently render the action of the 8 members void and illegal and in direct contravention of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We therefore condemn in strong terms and in it’s entirety the conduct of the 8 members of the Plateau State House of Assembly whose action are capable of destabilizing our hard earned democracy and undermining youth representation in governance. This act of Legislative rascality is highly intolerable and condemnable.”
The Movement has thus assured that it will use all civil and peaceful means to restore sanity and the legitimate leadership of Rt Hon Abok Ayuba in the Plateau State House of Assembly and that democracy must prevail.
