Opposition urges Federal Government to ensure transparency in grain distribution

Written by on February 12, 2024

The two leading opposition parties in the country, PDP and LP, are calling on the Federal Government to make good its promise to release 102,000 metric tons of assorted grains as a short-term measure to address the food crisis in the country.

In two separate interviews, the leadership of both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party urged the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to redeem itself by following through on its promises, noting that the government had failed to keep previous promises.

The Federal Government had last Thursday announced plans to release 42,000 metric tons of maize, millet, garri and other commodities from the National Strategic Grain Reserve.

Although Nigerians are struggling to feed for now, President Bola Tinubu, is saying his administration was keen to make Nigeria self-sufficient in food production and become a net exporter of agricultural products through what he calls aggressive mechanization.

Tinubu made this known when he met with a delegation from the Global Tijaniyya Movement, led by Khalifa Muhammad Mahe Niass, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He affirmed his administration’s support to give ease and succor to the 2024 Hajj pilgrims.
